Ritratto di mezza lunghezza del presidente Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-1893), 19o presidente degli Stati Uniti. Il presidente Hayes è seduto con le mani poste davanti a lui. In una voce diario del 5 agosto 1877, il presidente Hayes registrò che l'artista William Garle Browne aveva recentemente completato un ritratto busto di lui come uno studio per un ritratto a tutta lunghezza e lodato come "forse, il migliore ancora dipinto." Oltre alle sue sedute con il presidente Hayes, Browne ha fatto affidamento su una fotografia di Mathew B.
