Fino all'arrivo delle truppe dell'Unione, la proclamazione dell'emancipazione significò poco per la maggior parte degli schiavi negli Stati confederati d'America. Per gli afroamericani che vivono a Richmond, Virginia, il giorno dell'emancipazione arrivò il 3 aprile 1865. L'evento continuò ad essere celebrato annualmente in quel giorno fino al XX secolo. Questa fotografia mostra la celebrazione nel 1905, 40 anni dopo la fine della guerra.
