Il movimento Spiritualista fu fondato sulla convinzione che l'anima umana esiste al di là del corpo e che i morti potessero comunicare con i vivi. Questo concetto si sviluppò negli anni 1850 e acquisì slancio negli Stati Uniti dopo la guerra civile. Mumler ha affermato di poter fotografare gli spiriti dei cari defunti. Anche se i suoi metodi non sono mai stati divulgati, ha fatto immagini fantasma incorporando un quadro esistente del defunto in una nuova fotografia che ha fatto del parente sopravvissuto. La sua attività di otto anni è stata segnata da processi di corte civile altamente pubblicizzati per frode.
