Nel 1871 Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (1829-1887) guidò il Hayden Geological Survey, la prima esplorazione federale della regione del Wyoming che sarebbe stata fondata come Yellowstone National Park nel 1872. Tra quelli del sondaggio c'era William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), poi riconosciuto come uno dei più importanti artisti e fotografi dell'Occidente americano. Più di sei decenni dopo l'Indagine, Jackson, ora nei suoi primi anni Novanta, fu chiamato a creare opere d'arte originali raffiguranti l'Occidente come parte delle esposizioni interpretative per un museo destinato ad aprire nel Dipartimento degli Interni degli Stati Uniti
