Come molti altri scultori americani che lavorano in stile neoclassico, William Henry Rinehart ha disegnato il soggetto per le sue sculture di compagni di Eroe (qui) e Leander (86.513) dalla mitologia antica. Come detto dal poeta romano Ovid, gli amanti attraversati dalla stella vivevano sui lati opposti dell'Hellespont, il corpo stretto di acqua che separava la Turchia moderna e la Grecia. Ogni notte Leander nuotava l'Inferno per stare con Eroe, che lo guidava con la sua lampada. Ma una notte tempestosa la sua lampada esplose, e Leander perse la strada e annegò. Con dolore, Eroe si gettò in mare e annegò. La loro storia malinconica era popolare tra il pubblico vittoriano di Rinehart
