Il pittore William Hodges, fu uno dei primi artisti professionisti del Regno Unito a venire in India. Viaggiò attraverso l'India nei primi anni del 1780, dipingendo la vista pittoresca in olio e acquerello. Hodges fu incantato dall’architettura islamica e descrisse ‘The Taj Mahal’ come “una perla perfetta su un terreno azzurro”.
