William Hogarth è meglio conosciuto per le sue incisioni satirici che lampoonano la moda e la maggior parte della società inglese del XVIII secolo. La maggior parte dei suoi ritratti sono datati tra il 1738 e il 1743, quando ha trovato un mercato pronto per le somiglianze individuali, e mostra lo stesso senso di osservazione acuto che lo ha reso un ottimo satirico.
