William Law è stato costretto a vendere la sua proprietà sull'isola di Grenada per risolvere i suoi debiti. L'inventario dei beni che è stato presentato e firmato dal Lord Mayor di Londra include un elenco degli schiavi per nome, colore, paese, età supposta e marcatura. Anche se l'asta di proprietà ha avuto luogo quasi quindici anni dopo l'abolizione britannica del commercio di schiavi, l'inventario documenti giovani schiavi nati in Africa e acquistati da legge. Questo documento esemplifica anche la convinzione che gli schiavi neri, anche i bambini di un mese, fossero semplicemente proprietà da allevare e barattare.
