Bessie Potter (1872-1955) nacque a Saint Louis e studiò a Chicago. Ha guadagnato una reputazione come scultore di statuette in bronzo che ritraggono soggetti femminili intimi. Nel 1899 sposò il pittore Robert Vonnoh e visse a New York, dove lei e suo marito conoscevano senza dubbio Chase. In questo ritratto, Chase cattura la personalità sensibile ma riservata di Potter. La sua posa e il morbido turbante che indossa richiamano quelli in un autoritratto (1790; Uffizi, Firenze) del pittore francese Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842), che Potter a quanto pare ammirava.
