Quando Morris ha progettatoTesta di serpentenel 1877, sete indiane erano in stile e ampiamente importate dall'India britannica. Questo design si distingue per i suoi motivi diminutivi e i forti colori rosso e nero, che erano alla moda solo per un breve periodo prima che le tonalità più pallide riguadagnassero favore con i clienti. Mentre il suo schema di colori suggerisce terre lontane con climi più caldi, il modello mostra uno dei fiori preferiti di Morris: il fratillario, un girasole che ricordava di crescere nei prati vicino Oxford.
