Il Derby Day presenta un panorama satirico della vita moderna vittoriana. Quando fu esposto per la prima volta alla Royal Academy nel 1858, si dimostrò così popolare che un binario doveva essere messo fino a mantenere la folla. Ci sono tre incidenti principali. Sulla sinistra un gruppo di uomini in cappelli superiori si concentrano sul 'figlio-rigger' con il suo tavolo. Al centro c'è un acrobato e suo figlio, che guarda a lungo a un sontuoso picnic che viene allestito da un footman. Dietro di loro sono carrozze piene di racegoers, tra cui, all'estrema destra, l'amante di un uomo che si appoggia contro la carrozza.
