Nel corso degli anni, la rappresentazione di Mount degli afroamericani subì un'evoluzione, diventando più sensibile e meno incline alle raffigurazioni stereotipi che produsse nei dipinti precedenti, come la Danza Rustica Dopo una Sleigh Ride (1830). Il Banjo Player è stato un grande lavoro, uno dei più grandi ritratti Monte completato, ed è stato commissionato da William Schaus per lo studio di Goupil & Company. C'è stata una certa speculazione sull'identità del sitter, che potrebbe essere stato George Freeman, un lavoratore per John Brewster. Nel suo diario, Mount menziona che “Ho dipinto il giocatore Banjo in otto giorni (16 sedute), due sedute al giorno. ”
