Conosciuto negli anni 1860 per i suoi quadri quintessentially americani della costa del New England, William Haseltine si trasferì definitivamente in Europa nel 1867. Era stato in Europa prima, studiando nel 1850 a Dusseldorf insieme ai compagni americani Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902) e T. Worthington Whittredge (1820 - 1910).
