Ispirato dal Trionfo di Giulio Cesare di Andrea Mantegna (Londra, Hampton Court, Royal Collection) la cui rigorosa costruzione è reinterpretata da Rubens con la vivacità del barocco, questo dipinto è stato acquisito nel 1686 da Cosimo III con il suo ciondolo, Triumphal Entry di Enrico IV a Parigi. Anche se entrambi sono stati lasciati incompleti, costituiscono le parti più importanti esistenti della serie di dipinti monumentali (1627-30) che narrano la vita di Enrico IV di Francia.
