Padre Jan Neyen è stato un uomo importante nella storia dei Paesi Bassi. Fu commissario generale di sei province dell'Ordine dei Frati Minori nei Paesi Bassi e dell'Impero tedesco. Nel 1607 fu mandato dall'arciduca Alberto e dall'arciduca Isabella all'Aia, per rappresentare i Paesi Bassi meridionali nei negoziati con la Repubblica. Questi colloqui portarono, il 9 aprile 1609, ai dodici anni Truce; una tregua durante la guerra di ottanta anni. Secondo un vecchio documento che in precedenza era sul retro del dipinto, il ritratto risale al 1607, quando Neyen aveva circa 37 anni.
