Questo ritratto fu probabilmente fatto mentre la principessa di Condé era a Bruxelles dopo il suo matrimonio intorno al 1609. Rubens, recentemente tornato dall'Italia e sarebbe diventato l'artista barocca quintessenza del periodo Controriforma. L'aneddoto storico ci dice che mentre la principessa appare piuttosto pallida e sopraffatta dal suo costume, era considerata una bellezza, ed era fuggita a Bruxelles dopo il suo matrimonio per sfuggire ai progressi del re Enrico IV. Un punto culminante di questo sontuoso ritratto è la splendida pelle luminosa dipinta da Rubens.
