La giovane donna riccamente vestita raffigurata qui, tenendo un libro di preghiera in una mano e ritraendo il suo velo con l'altra, è Helen Fourment (1614-1673). La figlia di un commerciante di seta di Anversa, sposò Peter Paul Rubens nel 1630 quando aveva 16 anni e Rubens, vedovo, aveva 53 anni. Rubens la mostra come vicino alla dimensione della vita, resa in una delicata combinazione di gesso nero, rosso e bianco, celebrando la sua bellezza e la sua abilità di artista.
