Xu Beihong è nato a Yixing, provincia di Jiangsu. Nel 1916, ha ottenuto la sua istruzione superiore presso l'Università Aurora di Shanghai, laureandosi in francese, e poi ha lavorato come Art Director di Hardoon Garden e un professore di arte presso l'Università Mingzhi. Viaggiò in Giappone nel 1917 per studiare arti per un breve periodo. Nel 1919 andò in Francia ed entrò nella Scuola Nazionale di Belle Arti di Parigi, in Francia (École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris). Nel 1927 tornò nel suo paese e fondò la South China Art Academy, e lavorò anche come professore presso il Dipartimento dell'educazione artistica dell'Università di Jiangsu a Nanchino. Nel 1928 divenne preside del College of Arts of Peking University, e in seguito iniziò a insegnare alla National Central University. Nel 1943 fondò la China Academy of Art. Nel 1946 fu nominato Decano del National Beiping Art College. Nel 1949 divenne presidente della Chinese Painters Association e decano dell'Accademia Centrale della Cina di Belle Arti nel 1950.
