Nell'anno di Bingyin (1926), Xu Beihong aveva 32 anni. L'iscrizione sul lato sinistro inferiore del dipinto legge: "Beihong, inverno dell'anno di Bingyin (1926)." Nella sua autobiografia, In Xu Beihong's Own Words, il pittore ha scritto, "Ho fatto il maggior lavoro nell'anno di Bingyin (1926), e alcuni di loro erano eccezionali." Flute Music è stato completato in uno studio del sesto piano nell’ottavo arrondissement di Parigi, basato su un disegno che Xu aveva realizzato nel 1924. La figura del dipinto era la moglie di Xu Beihong all'epoca, Jiang Biwei.
