Come uno dei primi alberi a fiorire, la prugna, un soggetto popolare nella pittura, rappresenta l'inverno. La delicata ma tenace bellezza dei fiori di prugne ricoperti di neve tardo inverno è stata presa dagli studiosi confuciani come metafora per affrontare la durezza con dignità ed eleganza. Yi Yu-won, un pittore riconosciuto, poeta e calligrafo, nonché un noto studioso-ufficiale, servì come primo ministro sotto l'imperatore Gojong (reigned 1864–1907). In questo lavoro ha abilmente juxtaposed i forti, tratti angolari del ramo susino con sottili, precisi offshoot punteggiati di fiori delicati. Dipingendo su uno sfondo grigio evocativo di un giorno coperto, Yi ha creato profondità attraverso l'inclusione di un ramo più piccolo la cui forma riecheggia quello principale in una tonalità più leggera.
