I contorni rotti e flickering che tengono viva la superficie e la carne in questo ritratto esemplificano la brillantezza tecnica di Velázquez e il notevole controllo all'interno di una gamma cromatica stretta. Probabilmente serviva come studio per un volto identico che guarda fuori dal suo Surrender di Breda (ca. 1635, Museo del Prado, Madrid), una commissione importante per il Palazzo Buen Retiro di Filippo IV. Quella figura a volte è stata presa come autoritratto seguendo una grande tradizione di artisti che si inseriscono abilmente in soggetti storici o biblici. Se questo studio è un autoritratto, potrebbe essere quello descritto come metà lunghezza e incompiuto in un inventario postumo delle opere di Velázquez.
