Questa è una delle due versioni di Manet di Delacroix's celebre dipinto del 1822 (Musée du Louvre, Parigi). L'altro, una copia più letterale (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyons), risale a circa 1855, quando l'originale era in vista presso l'Exposition Universelle. Il presente studio a colori liberamente eseguito è pensato per essere stato dipinto circa 1859, l'anno di Manet prima presentazione Salon.
