Courbet è pensato di aver dipinto questo paesaggio lussureggiante a Fontcouverte, nella regione di Saintonge della Francia occidentale. Nell'estate del 1862 si schizzò accanto a Louis-Augustin Auguin (1824-1904), il suo probabile primo proprietario. La tela potrebbe essere stata inclusa in una mostra che Courbet e Auguin contribuirono ad organizzare a Saintes all'inizio del 1863. Un'altra visione di Fontcouverte è stata esposta come una collaborazione tra gli artisti (dove è sconosciuto).
