Rembrandt aveva un grande studio con molti allievi che ha emulato il suo stile e anche la sua firma. Come risultato, feroce dibattito sull'autore dei suoi dipinti continua oggi. Questo lavoro fu attribuito universalmente a Rembrandt fino a quando gli studiosi “demoted” nel 1982, sostenendo che il rendering dello spazio, della texture e dell’anatomia suggerisce un’imitazione abile di un artista sconosciuto. In assenza di documentazione o prove conclusive dall'analisi tecnica, il dibattito prosegue.
