Nato e cresciuto a Osaka, Jiun Sonja è stato uno studioso con ampi interessi spirituali che è stato ordinato monaco buddista Shingon, ma in seguito si è rivolto allo studio di Zen e Shinto. Un riformista preoccupato della lassità morale del clero buddista del suo tempo, ha disegnato nella sua calligrafia sulle opere energetiche e spontaneamente spazzolate dei monaci Zen del passato. In questo rotolo appeso, le parole “profonda sincerità” sono state prese dal Sutra di Meditazione su Amida Buddha (Kanmuryōju-kyō), un testo buddista di Terra pura, ma i personaggi vigorosi e bruscamente inscritti di Jiun riflettono chiaramente la forza e l’austerità della tradizionale formazione monastica Zen.
