Nel 1736 il poeta e drammaturgo inglese Edward Young stava viaggiando attraverso la Francia con la sua famiglia quando la sua figliastra, Elizabeth Temple, morì a Lyons. Proibito di interferire i suoi resti nel cimitero cattolico della città a causa della loro religione, è stato obbligato a cercare il terreno di sepoltura protestante nel mezzo della notte. Il suo poema romantico e indelebilmente macabro relativo alla storia, The Complaint, or Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality (1742–45), è stato particolarmente popolare durante il periodo della Rivoluzione francese. Questo è uno studio per un dipinto Vafflard esposto al Salone del 1804 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Angoulême).
