メルボルンの常設展示棟をデザインする競争は、1877年後半に発表されました。 1878年5月、レイド&バーンズ・アーキテクツのジョセフ・リードが1879年2月、カールトン・ガーデンズの建設工事が進行中となりました。 1879年5月、展示会コミッショナーは、外資系出展者からの大きな需要に応じて、2つの恒久的な機械のアンexesと10万平方メートルの臨時アネックスを追加しました。 Messrs Walker & Halidayが一時的な附属書を設計し、構築するために委託されたが、永続アンexesはReedによって設計されました。 1880年10月1日にメルボルン国際展示会の開口部に、展示棟と再設計のカールトンガーデンが完成しましたが、その後約1か月間、タッチアップ工事を続けました。
