この絵画は、日本でホットエイとして知られる、愛される半歴史仏教の仏像であるブダイを描いています。 作品は伝統的にIkei Shūtokuとして知られるアーティストと関連付けられていましたが、伝統的に祝われた中世のインク画家のSesshū Tōyoの従事者は、9世紀に作られたと考えられています。 1914年、チャールズ・スチュワート・スミス(1832年～1909)のコレクションから、他の約200点の日本画と中国画のコレクションに入った後期作品。 スミスは、主にヨーロッパの絵画のコレクターでしたが、また、彼の人生の最後の2年の間に多くの日本人と中国の芸術の作品を、1892年に日本でハネムーンした彼の第三の妻の後に取得しました。
