One of a pair (see also 1992.67b), this window was designed by Northrop for a commission by Cyrus Hall McCormick Jr., heir to the McCormick family’s agricultural machinery company, for Saint Mary’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove, California, in memory of his wife, Harriet. The inscription on the original mat, “Scheme No. 7,” indicates that this design was one of several options made for McCormick. In fact, the Metropolitan Museum owns another design featuring different flowers. This particular pair of scenes depicts foxgloves and lilies, and is made animate with a highly naturalistic depiction of stalks swaying in the breeze. McCormick settled on this pair but may not have liked Northrop’s delicate and ethereal treatment of the purple mountains and blue sky, as the background in the final window is filled with a dizzying display of purple clematis leaves and petals.
