Di Cavalcanti’s artistic career spanned sixty years, from 1916 until the time of his death. His work was characterized by a constant back-and-forth between art and illustration. He traveled to Europe for the first time in 1923 and worked as a journalist in Paris for two years. While there, he saw for the first time the masterpieces on display in that city’s museums and came into contact with the vibrant European avant-garde and, most significantly, with expressionism. “One day, I discovered German expressionists,” he wrote in his autobiography. “I was so dazzled I ripped up all my paintings.” Di Cavalcanti was particularly drawn to the new objectivity movement, which combined the distortion of expressionism, the fragmentation of futurism, and the precision of realism.
