The Jewish painter Felix Nussbaum emigrated in 1935 to Belgium. After the German invasion in 1940, he was deported to the French internment camp St. Cyprien. From there he was able to flee to Belgium. In this painting, Nussbaum is able to communicate the despair and hopelessness he experienced in the camp.
