Pen and ink etching of Helen Wills playing tennis. She is facing the viewer, her right arm raised and holding a racquet, ball in air at far left. She also is holding a ball in her left hand. Pencil signed with cypher. Frederick Childe Hassam (1859-1935), one of the leading American Impressionists, was a prolific artist from 1882 through his death in 1935. Known primarily for his watercolors, he began printmaking at the age of 56. Hassam spent his summers in East Hampton on Long Island, where he met and befriended tennis great Helen Wills. Hassam taught Wills, an amateur artist, etching during this time. Hassam made several studies of Helen Wills which were printed in small numbers.
