Butler is credited as being the founder of the American Fine Arts Society. Born in New York City, he was an early advocate for city recreation and beautification. Butler convinced Andrew Carnegie to fund the construction of a recreational manmade lake near Princeton University. Originally a patent lawyer, Butler gave up this practice to pursue painting in 1884. He created technical drawings for the Carnegie and Edison companies before concentrating on portraits and landscapes.Zion National ParkSpringdale, Utah
