The Great Oak (1662) is an oil painting by Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael. Ruisdael's favorite subjects are simple woodland scenes, similar to those of Everdingen and Hobbema. He is especially noted as a painter of trees, and his rendering of foliage, particularly of oak leaf age, is characterized by the greatest spirit and precision. The painting is signed and dated, however, in the 18th century it was wrongly attributed to Nicolaes Berchem. In fact Berchem painted only the staffage figures of the picture. The painting is now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles.
