In June 1973, the inaugural Māori Artists and Writers hui, Ngā Puna Wahanga, provided a distinct opportunity for the aspirations of Māori in the creative arts. The event attracted many prominent artists involved in painting, sculpting, carving and weaving. Writers, musicians, film makers, photographers, actors, dancers and singers attended the gathering at Te Kaha-nuia-tiki marae in Te Kaha. Te Kaha and Te Whānau a Apanui people hosted this important hui.Miller’s photographs summarise many changes within Māori society. He has photographed over 40 years of frontline action and behind-the-scenes activities that evoke the mana of people and place.
