Saint Clara reads the Bible, bathing in light. Clara was a 13th-century Italian nun who lived without possession and centered on spirituality. She had many followers and was declared sacred four days after her death. The painter Court chose not to depict her in a habit but invented a medieval version of her clothes and hair style. This painting was previously mistakenly regarded as a portrait of Clémence de Vernède, Countess de Corneillan and from her marriage in 1864 Baroness de Pagès (1818-1901) as Saint Catherine.
