Konoshima Okoku (1877-1938) was a Japanese painter born and active in Kyoto. The thick trunk on the left is a cherry tree. Although cherry blossoms are not depicted, petals scattered on the ground suggest full-bloom.Unlike the conventional gold leaf screens that are gilded on the front surface, this work is gilded on the reverse side of the silk. The glow showing through the silk fabric is subdued and ideal for representing the soft sunlight.
