The King, as a child, richly dressed, is riding a large pony which is richly harnessed. Clearly inspired in the equestrian portrait of the Prince Baltasar Carlos painted by Velázquez, it was even attributed to the great master in the 19th century. The painting is pleasant to the eye and the details and accessories are well executed, with great ease. Nonetheless, the head and other main parts do not display the quality of the work of a master, and the lack of dynamism of the king is evident. All these details lead us to think that, without ruling out the attribution to Carreño, it is possible that this work was carried out by Sebastián Herrera, a court painter years before Carreño de Miranda.
