Japan was closed to trade with the West until 1854, and it was not until the second half of the 19th century that Japanese decoration became a powerful influence on European and American design. The vases were likely acquired by the Fricks in the 1880s. They are ornamented with flying sparrows and falling Japanese maple leaves on the front and spider webs and insects on the back.
