William Law was forced to sell his estate on the island of Grenada to settle his debts. The inventory of assets that was presented to and signed by the Lord Mayor of London includes a listing of the slaves by name, color, country, supposed age, and defining markings. Although the estate auction took place nearly fifteen years after the British abolition of the slave trade, the inventory documents younger slaves born in African and bought by Law. This document also exemplifies the belief that black slaves, even months-old babies, were merely property to be bred and bartered.
