Invoking tradition to create a new Chinese art that served contemporary needs, Fu practiced figure painting to explore the different qualities of brush lines, which he regarded to be a distinctive character of Chinese painting. The two goddesses of the Xiang River from the Nine Songs became Fu’s most famous images of archaic beauty.
