This work was done in the spirit of Ribera (1590-1652) under whom Luca Giordano studied for five years. It might be the figure of Euclid, detached from worldly goods, typical of the style of painting prevalent in Naples at the time, or simply a begging philosopher. Whatever the case, this figure of a man is striking: he is brandishing his works and showing them to us in a last attempt at persuasion. In the same time; the bottle of wine on his belt and the expression in his eyes show a man lost to drink.
