Wilhelm Camphausen (1818-1885) wurde vor allem durch seine großformatigen Reiterporträts vom Großen Kurfürsten, Friedrich dem Großen und Kaiser Wilhelm I. populär. Das Brustbild Friedrichs ist eine ernergische Interpretation des Königs, die er in dem berühmteren großen Reiterbild König Friedrichs II., das ihn umgeben von seinen Generälen zu Pferde zeigt, wiederholt.
