In 1969, as his vision deteriorated, Xie embraced the bold cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu (act. ca. 700–750) and Huaisu (725–ca. 799), the two greatest exponents of this type of script. Here, Xie also transcribed several connoisseurs" comments and colophons on Zhang"s calligraphic work, as well as the master"s biography from the Xuanhe shupu (ca. 1120), a catalogue of the emperor Huizong"s calligraphy collection.
