Édouard Baldus era originariamente un pittore di Westphalia, che viveva a Parigi. Nel 1849 Baldo divenne cittadino francese. Iniziò poi il suo lavoro come fotografo professionista e fu uno dei membri fondatori della Società Heliographique. Baldus ha lavorato su molte commissioni ufficiali, tra cui la Commissione des Monuments Historiques. La Commissione des Monuments Historiques fu fondata intorno al 1851 da funzionari del Secondo Impero nel tentativo di promuovere il nazionalismo francese richiamando l'attenzione sul paese
