The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Posteriormente, Brunei Darussalam se incorporó el 7 de enero de 1984, Viet Nam el 28 de julio de 1995, Lao PDR y Myanmar el 23 de julio de 1997 y Camboya el 30 de abril de 1999, lo que constituye hoy los diez Estados Miembros de la ASEAN.
