Esta pintura representa una cascada en la Auvernia, aunque fue pintada en Italia. Representa la estética naturalista vigorosa que distingue el logro de Michallon de gran parte del tepid Neoclassicismo de principios del siglo XIX. Hasta que la mayor parte de la obra de Michallon fue puesta a la luz en 1930, el papel del artista como uno de los creadores de la nueva escuela de pintura paisajística fue oscurecido por el renombre de su alumno Camille Corot. Los historiadores se vieron obligados a cambiar su visión cuando la fuente de la visión de Corot se hizo evidente en la obra del joven artista que primero le había enseñado a pintar.
