Le prime opere esposte da Schreyer furono scene militari e storiche. Dopo un viaggio di studio in Francia e Nord Africa, si stabilì a Parigi dal 1862 al 1870, quando tornò a Francoforte. A Parigi ha esposto scene arabe che erano ammirevolmente rispetto a quelle di Delacroix e di Fromentin. Non usciva con i suoi dipinti e spesso ripetuti motivi. Un'immagine inversa del cavaliere in questo lavoro appare come la figura centrale del Guerriero Arabo (Milwaukee Art Center).
