Wertmüller, pintor de origen sueco, recibió la comisión de un retrato completo de Marie-Antoinette y sus hijos, que fue mostrada en el Salón en 1785 pero no fue bien recibida por los críticos. En 1788, tomó la cara de la Reina para hacer un pequeño retrato de cabeza y hombro. Con un toque de sonrisa, y con su cara girada hacia el espectador y la cabeza lanzada ligeramente hacia atrás, Marie-Antoinette se muestra en una pose dinámica y natural.
