In diesem austeren und hinterlistigen Bild zeigt Isenbrant Christus in Form eines Ecce-Homos – dem Volk Jerusalems von Pilatus, dem römischen Präfekten der Stadt, vor dem Abführen zum Gekreuzigten. Er trägt eine Dornenkrone und trägt auf seinem exponierten Torso die Wunden von seiner Fahnung. Die feindliche Menge wird jedoch weggelassen. In der Nähe, in der halben und fast lebensgroßen, sind Christus und seine Mutter für die hingebungsvolle Betrachtung isoliert worden. Sie werden direkt dem Betrachter vorgestellt, der zum Richter Christi wird, sowie einem Teilnehmer an der Trauer der Jungfrau.
